Adaptive support within Learn

How might we create a learning experience that meets students where they are?

Background

When a student misses a question in Learn, they are simply shown the correct answer, with no effort to adapt the support provided. This revealed an opportunity for Quizlet: by detecting when a student is struggling and providing the right kind of adaptive support, like allowing students to retry answer incorrect questions, or having access to better hints, Learn could better help students progress through challenging concepts–making the learning experience more personalized, effective, and empowering.

Hypothesis

When a student is struggling with a concept, if we give them an opportunity to work through their mistake, they will feel motivated to keep studying and will be more likely to get the question correct the next time they see it.

Results

While this experiment garnered neutral results and was ultimately not rolled out, I still think it has an interesting story to tell!

  • Small directional lifts to engagement - this suggest this helped some users not drop off early after getting a question incorrect, which was common behavior

  • 90% of users engaged with the feature which proved it was a clear and intuitive

Quizlet user

“When you get a question wrong on the first try and it immediately gives you the answer, I’m not sure that’s as helpful as getting to try it again. Cause if on the second time I see the question and still get it wrong, then it’s a signal that I need to go back to my notes or textbook. ”

Quizlet user

“Retrying it again immediately afterwards is more efficient because most times I know the answer and I just want to prove that instead of having to wait to see the question again.”
